Noun [Proto-Japonic]

Etymology: A surface analysis suggests that this could be an ancient compound of *to (“place”, as in Old Japanese 跡 ⟨ato₁⟩, “footprint, track”, from “foot place, where one has stepped”) + *kə (noun-forming suffixing element denoting “place”, as in Old Japanese ここ ⟨ko₂ko₂⟩, “here”, from “this place”) + *-rə (noun-forming suffixing element, apparently indicating within a general area, possibly as in Old Japanese 心 ⟨ko₂ko₂ro₂⟩, “heart, mind, emotions”, Old Japanese 頃 ⟨ko₂ro₂⟩, “general span of time, around a certain time”, Old Japanese うつろ ⟨uturo₂⟩, “hollowness, empty interior”). The inital *to- changed to *tə- due to Arisaka's law.
